Identifying and Treating Common Scalp Issues in Children

Dandruff and Cradle Cap

Dandruff and cradle cap, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, are other common scalp conditions.

What it looks like: This condition presents as flaky, white or yellow scales on the scalp that brush off easily. It may appear oily or crusty, especially in infants, where it is referred to as cradle cap.

Other signs: Mild redness is present, but there is no intense itching, unlike with lice.

What to do: Use dandruff shampoo containing zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide. For cradle cap, gently massage baby oil on the scalp and comb the flakes away. A doctor’s visit is only necessary if the condition spreads to the face or ears or becomes very inflamed.

Flea Eggs and Debris

If you have pets, flea eggs or debris could be the cause of your child’s scalp issues.

What it looks like: You may notice tiny white specks that fall off easily, unlike nits. Actual fleas may be visible, along with dark “flea dirt” (feces) that turns red when wet.

Other signs: Your pet may be scratching excessively, and you might see bites on your child’s ankles or legs.

What to do: Treat your pets and home for fleas. Wash your child’s hair with regular shampoo. Consult a doctor only if bites become infected or cause a severe allergic reaction.
