Identifying and Treating Common Scalp Issues in Children

Understanding scalp issues in children can be a daunting task for parents. With various conditions presenting similar symptoms, it’s essential to know how to differentiate between them. This guide will help you identify common scalp problems, their signs, and effective treatments, ensuring your child receives the appropriate care.

Identifying Lice and Nits

Lice and nits are among the most common scalp issues affecting children.

What it looks like: Nits are tiny white, yellow, or brown specks firmly glued to the hair shaft, typically within ¼ inch of the scalp. Unlike dandruff, they don’t brush off easily. Live lice appear as small, tan or grayish bugs about the size of a sesame seed, moving quickly and avoiding light.

Other signs: An itchy scalp, particularly behind the ears and neck, red bumps or sores from scratching, and your child may complain of “something crawling” on their head.

What to do: Use a fine-tooth lice comb on wet, conditioned hair. Over-the-counter lice treatments, such as permethrin or dimethicone, are effective. If sores become infected or if over-the-counter treatment fails after two applications, consult a doctor.
